Originally the crinoline, a stiff fabric made of horsehair and cotton or linen, is used to make underskirts and as a dress lining. The stiffened or structured fabric is designed to hold out woman's skirts and dresses, ladies wear it up in order the widen skirts to achieve a ballroom effect.
